BIMB to grow Visa debit card members to 500,000

Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad is hoping to increase Visa debit card members to 500,000 in 2011.

The bank issued 27,000 Visa debit cards over the past three weeks, according to a report by Bernama News Agency.

"Prior to this launching today, we have somehow introduced this to our close customers three weeks ago and we are doing like 1,500-2000 cards per day," said BIMB consumer banking general manager, Khairul Kamarudin.

Asked on the new credit card regulations introduced by Bank Negara Malaysia last week, Khairul said BIMB did not foresee any impact as it would not affect the evaluation process relating to credit worthiness.

"So, there's no major investment involved and requirement for the bank to change its system as it just changes one criteria, which is the minimum income," he said.
