Retail sector offers the least work flexibility: report

Only four in 10 retail employees feel their employers offer flexibility.

There is a growing mismatch between what employers believe about workplace flexibility and what employees experience. The mismatch is most evident in the retail sector, according to a report by Indeed.

Indeed’s "Beyond 9 to 5: The Future of Flexibility in Work" report revealed that whilst 83% of employers think their workplaces support flexible arrangements, only 61% of employees feel the same way.

In the retail sector, only 42% of employees feel their workplace offers flexibility.

Other industries like construction, real estate, hospitality, professional services, and technology also show significant differences in how employees and employers view flexible work options.

According to Indeed, the most favoured flexible work option amongst employees in Singapore is hybrid work (42%). Hybrid working is offered by 48% of employers in Singapore. Other flexibility options offered by employees include flexible hours (44%) and remote work (19%).

“Employers should consider offering flexible arrangements that suit both parties. Both employers and employees acknowledge the importance of flexibility, and aligning their perspectives can lead to positive outcomes for everyone,” Indeed said.

“As workplaces evolve, prioritising flexibility can help attract, retain, and empower talent, ultimately benefiting both employees and businesses,” it added.
